No personal rants or raves, just practical question. Seagate sent me a new HDD to replace the one that died. I'm going to install an OS on it. Keep in mind that Vista was running on it when it died last.
XP:
Pros: Stability, Compatability
Cons: Microsith will soon stop releasing security patches
Vista:
Pros: I'll have to upgrade to it eventually, SP1 has to be coming soon, aero looks kinda cool
Cons: Lack of compatability (but software is starting to catch up)
Discuss.

Vista all the way. SP1 was released a few days ago. I have never had any problems with it.

if you were already running it, i would say Vista
did you have any issues with it? not many i'm thinking or you would have started "why i am going back to xp" thread
i am still running XP (it was loaded on the box when i got it{ty JoJo})
but, if i were in your shoes, (had vista) i would go vista

Oh, SP1 is out. Wow I am nubcakes! OK, I was leaning Vista, but all the guys I live with are still on XP and it is a funny coincidence that I installed Vista and a new seagate HDD died in 9 months.
My biggest issue with vista was that HP had not released print drivers for it when I first installed it last September. Anyone know if they have?

Vista is about equal to XP in stability at this point, runs great!

Well it says that you should be able to use windows update to install SP1 but if thats not working (isnt showing up for me) try the DDL.

All depends on your system. If you don't have at least a Core2 Duo 2.0 or greater with 2GB of RAM, I would say XP. Otherwise try out Vista, if you don't like it, you can always go back.

Defiantly Vista, it is really stable right now with SP1 on it, a pain to install stuff because of the install messages that come up on your screen, but that is a good thing for anything trying to dl on to your computer. If you have the money and want a good version of Vista, get the 64-Bit Ultimate edition can support 4+ gigs of RAM and do a little more things than 32-bit can. IMHO, Vista is better.

Tough question. As Kock said for newer systems I'd go with Vista, only because I like the pretty interface. Vista is only mildly more secure on the surface and I'm glad to see Microscrew finally doing something about the automatic enable crap of the past, I'd rather the pop-ups than arrant .exe's running rampid. That said, the way vista handles memory seams to lend itself to buffer over runs more than XP does. I could wright a hole day on the security problems of both. In short it is still fairly difficult to gain access to any home computer using either. Servers and networks are a different story and neither provide much protection but mostly due to explorer errors and data base .dlls and when all else fails people are less than smart so a well placed link usually gets the job done.
An odd thing I, and others, have noticed is vista seams to take up allot of your memory; however, many times when you open new programs it doesn't seam to be using any more resources than before. Maybe the OS is reserving the memory for the next program or something but I've never noticed it before on any other OS.
If your just skimming this babbling nonsense here is my point. The two OS's basally are the same. Same security wise, vista is a little more system intensive but otherwise operate the same, and I only use either when i have to (games and some online classes). I like how vista stole everything good about MAC OS's UI, whom stole it form linux distros, and thats the only reason I like it. Just wondering when windows will pick up on the multiple desk top like a Linux/Unix system. I love having at least 2 desktops, and no dual monitors will not work its expensive and i don't have the space.
Very sort version, their the same. If your games work pick one, other wise use a Debian, Red Hat, Slax, or your other favorite distro of Linux. My personal preference, at the moment, is Ubuntu or Kbuntu and Back|Track3.

I am currently running vista business 32. I will probably upgrade to ultimate 64, once i get new hardware for the installation. (more ram, new mobo, new HDD's)
that means i will be selling a 680i lt, 2x1GB crucial ballystix, A 74 GB WD raptor, and possibly 4 other 7200 rpm sata HDD's of various size. Going for 2xWD Velociraptor, raid 0, and 2x 500 GB HDD's, also raid 0. may do mirroring as well, if i get 4 instead of 2 500 GB HDD's.
Getting 2x2x1GB Patriot ddr2 1200 (5-5-5-12) and a 780i mobo from evga.
with that said, vista still needs some help. I hear with some mobos and x64, u can only install one memory stick at installation, then install the rest after updates.
Overall, i think it depends on ur pc. have a kickass pc with lots of ram, go vista x64, i guess.

If you can't decide, you could always dual boot :)
